It’s no secret that about 5 years ago or so i switched a lot of my website items to “preorder”
why???
There’s so many reasons but i’ll try to keep it simple and easy for ya
first off… I’m a smallish, one woman show that wears many hats and has a few other jobs - i’ve been a stylist for 30 some years and i’m also the creator @petitmagasin___ - so this means i don’t make ceramics full time.
CERAMICS TAKE ON AVERAGE WEEKS TO CREATE - ALL OF MY PIECES ARE FIRED TWICE - AND ONCE MORE IF THERE IS LUSTRE- THE FIRING ALONE TAKES NEARLY A WEEK AND THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE CREATING, DRYING, WASHING, SANDING OR THE SOURCING OF EXTRA MATERIALS IF THEY AREN’T STOCKED IN MY STUDIO.
MY RANGE OF AVAILABLE WORKS IS VERY EXPANSIVE AND HAS CHANGED FREQUENTLY WITH TIME OVER THE YEARS - IF I HAD MADE MULTIPLES of each item blindly i could potentially have been sitting on unsold stock. with the rise and fall of the economy over the last decade this idea is wild aND WASTEFUL FINANCIALLY AND WITH MATERIALS.
THE ADVANTAGES OF PREORDERS IS THAT YOU GET TO CHOOSE ITEMS THAT YOU want IN A VERY WIDE RANGE OF GLAZES!!! This is a very fun detail considering some of the options like plates where you can mix and match or build a set that works for you :)
sustainability is also one of the most important factors with the model of preorders. ceramics use many different resources like electricity to fire my kiln, water and some waste. I am also sometimes exposed to materials like mason stains, dust and fumes.
